Labor Day Weekend Recap (and a Training Update!)

I bought this bouquet to celebrate September because eucalyptus reminds me of our wedding, and it’s anniversary month!

September is here and with it came everyone’s favorite long weekend!

What did you and your loved ones do to celebrate Labor Day?

We heard a great and timely reminder on the radio on Labor Day. I love this verse and want to tuck it away in my heart as we head back to work this week.

Our weekend started with a Friday date night to a Thai restaurant in our little beach town. We had never been there before, but always had heard wonderful things from our neighbor Molly.

This isn’t the name of the restaurant we went to, but I can’t resist a good pun. 🙂 

In an effort to be extra present, we left our phones at home so I did not snap any pictures of our food. Sorry. Quality time > blogging. 🙂 Just trust me that it was delicious! Chad had sweet & sour chicken, and I had the pad thai with tofu and no egg. This place is kind of locally famous for their dirt-cheap pitchers of Thai beer. We refrained, but if you’re ever in San Diego let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction!

Saturday started with a 5 mile easy run around the beach before work. Did you know I work a few hours per week at a local gym in addition to my full-time job? I absolutely love it! I was a member before working there and would be hanging out with the same friends any way… so I honestly forget that it’s work and almost always forget to pick up my paycheck. It’s a fun thing for me. 🙂 I’m contemplating getting my personal training or group exercise certification next year. Do you have any experience with this? What organization did you get accredited through?

 After work, we went to “our spot” (I can’t tell you where it is because it’s a secret and it’s never crowded, even on holiday weekends…and then it wouldn’t be our spot, it’d be your spot :). Napping and swimming and reading. Perfect.

I started a new book by elite runner Becky Wade and am loving it so far! (Don’t be mad Gwen! I know I haven’t finished our book club read yet but I couldn’t bring my iPad on the sand and had to find a temporary substitute. ) 🙂 

We had a heatwave in San Diego this weekend and went to the movies for some expensive AC. It was so chilly inside and so worth it! We saw Wind River and man, I wasn’t expecting it, but it floored me. It covers some really really important issues and opened up my eyes to injustices that occur right here in our country that I knew nothing about. I couldn’t believe it was based on a true story and real place. Please go see it! (also, I just realized that this blog post has a lot of Olsens in it. The lead is played by Mary Kate and Ashley’s younger sister! She was awesome). 

On Sunday, I ran 16 miles – my longest run of the training cycle so far. The heatwave was still going strong and I struggled in the humidity — hence my reason for bringing an entire camelback along. 🙂 But, I got it done (albeit slowly) and enjoyed the beautiful views along the way! I love going farther and farther and am already looking forward to the next increase. 

Fun facts from this run: I got mooned by a car full of grown men. Seriously!? Who moons people?! And what ADULT moons people?! 

But I also got a high five and lots of thumbs up from other runners. So we’ll call it even. 🙂 

The rest of Sunday was filled with coffee, naps, chores, church, and dinner with friends. The good stuff. 🙂

We spent the day at the San Diego Safari Park (aka Disney world for animal lovers aka heaven aka my ultimate happy place) with our friends Alex and Amanda. 

Even though we saw tigers, lions, elephants, and gorillas…playing with the goats is always a highlight and Amanda agreed! 

Also- we’ve been listening to this song alllllll weekend. Have you heard it? It’s so sweet and catchy! I love their little family. 

Training Update from this week: 

Monday: rest, stretch, foam roll and walk 

Tuesday: 6 easy miles

Wednesday: 7 miles with some hills 

Thursday: cross-training + weights 

Friday: 5 miles w/ 2 tempo 

Saturday: 5 miles easy 

Sunday: 16 miles LSD (long, slow distance) 

TOTAL: 39 miles 

This week, the plan has me cross training more and dropping back to 32 miles with only a 1/2 marathon long run. It should be good! 

Before I leave you, some encouragement: 

 This week, with whatever life is going to throw at you, remember that who you are is not dependent on your circumstances, on how hard or easy your life feels, or on your own efforts and work. Whether you’re walking through rejection or belonging, your deepest heartache or your biggest high point, none of that changes who you are. 

Who you are as a woman is dependent on Christ and Christ alone! Because of His love for you, and because he says so, you are strong, valiant, fearless, and enough. 

Remember that with me this week! The world often says that we’re worthless, but God says that we were worth dying for.
