First, let me just start off by saying that whatever this bug is…is no joke! I even took the extra step to get the flu shot this year and still somehow managed to catch whatever was going around our office last week. I’ve been spending much more time in bed than I’d prefer, and subsequently, I am going CRAZY. Having a sick day is always nice for about 7 minutes, when I think “oh, it’ll be nice to get some rest, my body needs it,”…and then I start to lose it. Thank goodness for the blog world to give my brain some sort of activity to do.

It’s been a little while since I participated in the Currently series…so here goes!

Currently: December 2017

LOVING… all kinds of soup! The “colder” (i.e., 60 degrees) weather in San Diego has had me craving soups and stews over the past few weeks. I’m really loving dipping sourdough bread in tomato soup and have had it at least once a day over the past week. Is too much soup a thing? Comfort food is my jam these days!

CRAVING… salty foods. Pretzels, chips, you name it! Trying my hardest to resist. One of my favorite snacks that I have to try so hard not to buy every week is this mix from Trader Joe’s.

DRINKING…a TON of water (trying to kick out this sickness with extra fluids) with slices of lime from our friend’s lime trees. Perks of California living – free limes, lemons, oranges, and grapefruit year round! 🙂

MISSING…our families, of course! We definitely missed out on being with them this Christmas.

COOKING…some gluten-free penne + vegan “meat”balls for dinner!

LISTENING…to some of my favorite podcasts, including this recent episode of I’ll Have Another that I really enjoyed. Yay for a fellow East Coast transplant living in California. 🙂 And this girl is CRAZY fast. I’ve been trying to fill my commute + workouts with more podcasts for education and inspiration instead of just zoning out to music, lately. What podcasts do you enjoy?

DREAMING…of some big 2018 goals. I can’t wait to share them with you!

EXCITED FOR…NFL Playoffs, Chad’s birthday, our upcoming trip to San Francisco, and a half-marathon in two weeks!

WISHING…that this nasty bug or virus or whatever it is would just leave, already! I got things to do and miles to run!

PLANNING…races for 2018. So far, I have a few already on the books, but I’d love to do one race per month, even if it’s a tiny distance! They keep me so motivated. We’ll see. 🙂 What races do you have planned for 2018?

LOOKING FORWARD TO…one more long weekend and celebrating New Year’s Eve in San Diego!

Have a happy Thursday!

Our West Coast Christmas

Happy Wednesday! After a great mini-break for the holidays, I’m headed back to work for a short week this morning. But before I do, I’d love to share a few scenes from our West Coast Christmas with you!

We kicked off the Christmas Weekend by attending a worship night at a local church with our friend and her son. It was beautiful and such a sweet way to ring in Christmas and honor the one who it’s all for. 🙂

On Saturday, I worked at the gym and went for a great run in downtown San Diego afterwards. I hardly ever “go” downtown for anything other than a run, but am always glad when I do! It’s safe, clean, and beautiful. There is so much to look at that the miles typically fly by.

On Christmas Eve morning, we went for a family hike, Chase included, at Annie’s Canyon Trail in Solana Beach aka “The Mushroom Caves”. It’s super narrow but super fun! Full disclaimer, the photos above are not mine and that girl is not me! In the spirit of Christmas and being present with loved ones (aka each other), we opted to leave our phones at home for the day. No photos, only memories. 🙂

BUT, on the way home from the hike, we found this dresser in someone’s trash and I convinced Chad to pull over and haul it home! After he spent about 30 minutes fixing it up for me, it’s was as good as new (minus the one missing knob)! I really love the wood and always feel proud when we can turn someone else’s trash into our treasure. Plus, now I get to dig around the local antique stores to find some super cute mis-matched knobs to jazz it up a bit! Finding this was like a bonus Christmas gift.

Later that night, we went to Christmas Eve service at our church. It was so nice to celebrate in candlelight and with friends that have become our California “family away from family” this year.

We went out to dinner afterwards at one of our favorite restaurants in town that we reserve only for special occasions: Old Venice. Ravioli for me, pizza for Chad, and their bread that we LOVE. Pro tip: if you ever find yourself in San Diego for a race, this place would make a great Carbo-load dinner!

And then when we got home, we were so excited for Christmas that we decided we couldn’t wait until Christmas morning to open up our presents! What are we, 8?!

Our east coast family was SO generous and sent us really sweet gifts all the way across the country — it was so nice to have them to open, even if we couldn’t be together. I got new Nikes for Chad…but y’all, he is SUCH a better gift giver than I am, year after year. He got me a CUSTOM MEDAL HANGER that says “Stay Great” with a runner girl at the top as an ode to SGMG. So thoughtful! I love it and am excited to add to it in 2018.

We enjoyed a slow, chaos-free Christmas morning together at home (something I’ve never experienced before as we’re usually running around like crazy, trying to see all of our family!). It was so nice with just the two of us — we made a brunch of eggs (for Chad), Belgian waffles, fresh strawberries, and of course, mimosas in our vintage Eagles glasses from our friend Andrea, because Christmas Day was also Game Day for the birds this year! And we listened to Spanish Christmas songs. 🙂

We then got to FaceTime with almost everyone — my mom’s family, my dad’s family, and chad’s parents and our brother and sister in law. And yes, I totally stole this photo from my mom’s instagram! Isn’t my family adorable? Can you spot our call?

And then my favorite activity which I’m hoping becomes a new Christmas morning tradition for our little family, no matter the coast we’re on…we took a LONG, carefree walk around our neighborhood!

I was trying out the new hands-free leash my dad got me (I love it!) and chase had a fun time playing on the beach, though he is still a little scared of the waves. 🙂

We spent the evening with a group of friends and other couples who were not spending the holiday with family…it was so nice to be with a large crowd on Christmas and to share a meal and play games together! Thank you Luciana and Kyle for hosting and for cooking us some delicious Mexican. 🙂

And we came home in time for the second half of the Eagles v. Raiders as they just barely pulled off the W and secured that #1 seed! Woohoo!

Yesterday, we were given a bonus day off from work (thanks, boss!) so we got to sleep in a little bit (for us, that’s 7:30) and I had a mid-morning track workout by the sea.

Tell me, have you seen a more beautiful track? We spent the rest of the day grocery shopping, binge-watching the office, cooking comfort food, and getting ready for the week ahead. I am feeling like I’m coming down with some sort of bug and am planning on skipping my run today — and opting for some yoga and light strength work at home. I’ve learned the hard way that I am not someone who can force a run when my body is feeling weak — it usually turns out terribly and makes it worse! Do you sweat it out when you’re sick?!

And now it’s back to real life — man, how quickly Christmas seems to fly by as an adult! When I was a kid, it seemed to last forever and time moved so slowly (in a good way). Until next year, Santa!

Love,

Charlotte

Friday Five CHRISTMAS Edition!

Hey friends,

Just popping in for a quick round of Friday Five: Christmas Edition! Five things I’ve been loving lately, but with a little extra Christmas flair. 🙂

What are you doing for the Christmas weekend? We will be celebrating our first ever Christmas not with our extended families…but we do get to make our own memories here in San Diego for the first time! It’s very bittersweet, but I’m looking forward to a great weekend with some San Diego friends and our church family.

Friday Five: Christmas Edition

  1. My Not-So-Fancy Affordable yet Fancy Starbucks Drink

My favorite drink to get at Starbucks this time of year tastes like a fancy-pants $5 latte, but it’s only $1.95! It keeps both your taste buds AND your holiday budget satisfied. And to make it even sweeter, it doesn’t have the insane amount of calories as the seasonal lattes. Wanna know my trick? Order a tall Christmas blend coffee with almond, coconut, or soy milk (almond for me!), and ask for a pump of sugar-free peppermint syrup. Flavored syrups at Starbucks are free to add in and they taste like a million bucks but only cost one buck! Plus 95 cents.

2. Loving my Actual Christmas Devotional

by Alexandra Kuykendall on the Youversion Bible App. All about Jesus and oh contentment in Him. It’s all about letting go of the pressure and expectations of what we think the holidays are supposed to look like. This has been SO good for me (and also made me feel a lot better about forgetting to send out my Christmas cards this year…whoops). I hope you love it too. Click here to download it!

3. Unexpected Gifts

Like…a last-minute decision from leadership to give us the day after Christmas off from work (🙌🏼), boxes of Christmas lights and tinsel from a dear friend who knows that all of our Christmas decor is back in Delaware (so now, I’m so happy because our California home is decorated!!!) invitations to a celebrate with friends’ families, and this gift from a coworker who must know me pretty well. 🙂

4. Brooks’ Ugly Sweater 2017 did you get this year’s holiday shirt? I didn’t, but I might buy it for myself…especially because spreading cheer with every step is always my #1 goal!

5. Trader Joe’s Wintry Blend Now I’m sure I’ve posted about this before…but it really is my favorite! Have you tried it?

Leave a comment:

  • Do you have a favorite Christmas coffee or drink?
  • Is there a Christmas or Advent devotional that you’re loving?
  • What are your plans for Christmas?

Lots of love to you, friends! May your days be merry + bright.

Sentence Per Picture: Life Lately

Hello, hello friends! It looks like I haven’t blogged on here since Thanksgiving, which wasn’t planned, but it definitely ended up being a good thing! I was in need of a little digital detox and with the holiday season in full swing, life has been a little busy lately.

Way back before I had a blog, I loved reading one of the OG running bloggers, Hungry Runner Girl. She does this type of post now and then, and I enjoy it! So let’s catch up, “sentence-per-picture” style!

Chad and I went to Maui, Hawaii for a fun, adventure-filled 11 days after Thanksgiving!

It was filled with SO much quality time and as cheesy as it sounds, I fell in love with my husband all over again.

And this photo, taken on top of a volcano, was pretty much my face for the entire trip: a little adrenaline-rushed and a whole lot excited.

Maui is a little bit of Heaven on earth and I’m just thankful that we got to enjoy it.

When can we go back?!

Then we came back to real life: jobs and schedules and grocery shopping.

But we live in the coolest place (and not to mention it’s Christmastime!), so we weren’t too sad about it.

I was adopted into a friends’ Christmas party and “Favorite Things” gift-exchange with some incredible women who were a huge blessing to me!

And I packaged up orders of the “Weak Made Strong” tank and RUN sweatshirt for a bunch of you!

In upcountry Maui — jumping for joy (and thankfulness!) for your support of my little shop.

As for running, I’ve been gearing up for my next race, Carlsbad.

I’ve been working on speed over mid-distances.

We’ve also been in mourning the loss of Carson Wentz’s momentum this season.

But we’re also very hopeful in Nick Foles, who was also the quarterback when we were first dating…so it kinda feels like old times.

Lastly – I’ve been LOVING this new Christmas music!

Happy One Week Til Christmas, Y’all. May your work week fly by and may your coffee be strong. ❤️
